some blackthooth questions

Postby nonessentials » Sat Oct 05, 2013 4:52 pm

hey fellas,

i have got pretty far with building and installing my blacktooth laser, following warrens blog, muks build and other sources on the net. allthough now i have some questions i cant find answers on. i hope some of you guys will take the time and help me out. i will be very very thankfull for it.

1. mach3 motor tuning:
i am using the metric system (mm). these are my standart settings, they vary a lot from what you guys are using so i would like to have someones comment on them:
x&y axis: steps per: 39.37 / velocity: 3000 / acceleration: 2000
z axis: steps per: 2000 / velocity: 500 / acceleration: 50

2. on & off of the laser beam
when i am lasering i get many burning dots, where the movement of the laser has paused, when the beam was still on.
it feels like the motion is making a slightly to long break when starting and ending a form.

3. is it right that a stronger air assist for the laser nozzle can help a better cutting depth?

that should be it for now.

again thanks a lot for any help.

I don't use mach3, but your Z steps should probably be 1 and velocity and acceleration should be as high as mach3 allows since it isn't real. You don't want mach3 pausing for some imaginary Z movement (which is probably what's causing the dots).

Cutting depth increases with power and slowing the feed rate. Better air assist helps keep the kerf clear and prevents flare-ups at low feed rates.

Hey 3d0g,

thanks for your quick response. your comment on the laser dots made total sense to me.
i tried setting up 1 for the steps on the z axis, but it didnt help. When i put 1 the laser did turn on from the very begining and was shooting without a single break. and when i put other values like 2 it didnt had the wanted effect neather. did i do something wrong or do you might have another suggestion?

thanks again and have a calm sunday

I know some folks say that a lower air assist makes no difference with the cutting depth though personally, it did improve mine. I also have 0 residue from my cuts no matter what I cut using a higher flow air assist.

The little dots...sounds like an issue I had when I just started with Mach 3. What you can do with your g-code is switch your laser fire code from a slower processing code (like M3/M5 codes) and go with a undocumented code in Mach 3 that has a much much faster reaction time. The M11/M10 code.

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index. ... ic=18263.0

Have a look there and follow the subsequent conversation about it with Tweakie, he explains best how to integrate it into your current setup and you should see less issues coming from it. I've since upgraded beyond Mach 3 so I don't have my old settings handy right now.

hey muk,

thanks for your answer. i understood what i should do (in theory) and i read the related posts from tweakie many times.
somehow i dont get how i practicaly go on to follow your hints. how do i use the m3/m5 to switch on the laser? (atm it is done by z axis down).

i am posting here a piece of g code with the hope, that someone could show me how its supposed to look.

Don't feel stupid at all, setting this all up for the first time is a serious PITA.

Ah, to get that going, you do a little trick in CamBam. Z up and down still function the same but you go into the Mach3 Post processors. Make a new one or a copy of the existing Mach 3 PP.

Then at the top of the it you'll see End Cut and Start Cut.

For end cut: M10P1 G0Z0
For Start cut: M11P1 G0Z0

That's what I have as my pp in CamBam. Mach3-LZ (I renamed it to that).

hey muk,

i did exactely what you told, but it didnt work. the result was that the laser was just shooting once in the very beginning and then not anymore. i have recreated the whole mach3 settings to make sure the wasnt a nother error in my settings. i was wondering when the code was running the z axis didnt went to -0.0100 as it did when lasering before but went to 0.001 and with some other settings it goes to 0.000. is it possible that this could have to do withe the G0Z0 for start cut. should i change that to be something like G0Z-0.01 ?

thanks for your patience

You know what...I'll just grab the CamBam PP/settings & Mach 3 settings and upload them for ease of completeness. Sorry I'm only helping half way here :(

I'll get that stuff posted when I get home.

Ok, I couldn't find a way to upload the specific files and explain how to get the info back in, so I took screen shots of the Post Processor I use and of the cutting profile I use. There is a small portion cut out of the total settings in the second image here but I change nothing in the missing gap so it's no big deal. THESE ARE IN MM's, convert as necessary if you use inches :P

First is the PP. Just go to your system post processor files, put these new settings in and save it as a new one.

Image

This one here is my generic cut profile...I added a spiral lead in with 26 degrees to help with cutting very fine things like paper and the like where there would be a .3 mm gap in the cut. This cleaned it up. Also, there is holding tabs enabled there, just keep that disabled. Hope this helps!
