Steampunk Archangel: My latest creation

Steampunk Archangel: My latest creation

Postby Awesomeness » Fri Oct 29, 2010 3:46 am

I love making costumes, and this is my wife's costume this year. It's a set of wings that I call "Steampunk Archangel". They are 14'8" wide, and can fold up to be about 4' tall and 18" wide. The picture isn't superb, but you can see on the back that the wings are connected to a series of gears that allow them to open and close, perfectly synched in unison. They are opened "automagically" by pneumatic pistons.

The costume was debuted at BlizzCon 2010, last weekend.

Very cool, did you set up the gears and stuff to open them? Can I get a closer
photo of the gear setup?
I might take a ride down your way today and I can stop by.

Yes, the gears work. The two big gears in the center have one attached to each wing, and they rotate in opposite directions. The two smaller gears at the bottom are actually "stacks" of gears, because they engage each other to turn in opposite directions, then one of the two engages each large wing gear also.

So if you can follow what I'm saying verbally, it goes something like this... as the right wing folds up the top large gear rotates counterclockwise, that top large gear engages the right small gear which then rotates clockwise, the right small gear engages the left small gear which then rotates counterclockwise, and the left small gear engages the back large gear causing it to rotate clockwise which move the left wing up.

I'll get a couple better pictures of the gear setup.

Yes, that's the Alliance logo lion from World of Warcraft. BlizzCon is the convention of Blizzard Entertainment, the company that makes World of Warcraft, amongst other games.

I'll get a video clip too.

Here's a quick video we had of the wings being folded up, while walking.
